Take Back Our Union (TBOU) is a rank-and-file movement
initially founded by several members of Stations Department in May 2008 to address the dues check off crisis
and the effect it could have on contract negotiations with the MTA in 2009, and beyond.
Since then, TBOU has expanded its goals beyond the dues and contract issues to include the firing of elected union officers, the lack of transparency in the sale of the union offices, (and investment of those proceeds), and changes in the by-laws that were voted in by a fraction of the members -- approximately 1/8th, or 5,000 out of 38,000 members -- yet affects all of the members.
We seek accountability and transparency in all major decisions that affect the membership, and union democracy overall.
Our leadership team
includes nationally recognized current and former union officers, who provide a broad range of experience in direct action, organizing rallies and protests, media relations and coverage, and coalition building including both internal union organizing and community organizing.
TBOU also builds partnerships with other local unions, worker centers and community groups to address the issues that impact working class people and their communities. TBOU is committed to the struggle of health care as a human right as well as saving and improving defined pension plans for union workers.
By designing an internal union-based plan, and developing tactics and strategies, our goal is to provide members with the skills and tools to build power at the local level; increase their capacity to become effective advocates for change in legislation policy at the State and national level, and to hold our union institutions (both locally and nationally) accountable.
